IEC 63280

IEC 63280 is the international IEC rollup of the German VDI/VDE/NAMUR 2658 series, harmonizing the Module Type Package (MTP) concept into the IEC catalog. As of writing the series is in active development. Multiple parts mirror the corresponding MTP parts (general concepts, AML file format, OPC UA communication, HMI, diagnostics, and alarm management). A vendor implementing one stack therefore effectively implements the other.

For normative text, see the IEC 63280 series itself.

Why two standards

The technical content of IEC 63280 tracks MTP closely. The split exists for procurement and jurisdictional reasons: some specifications and tenders require an international (IEC) standard and rule out a German national one (VDI/VDE/NAMUR). IEC 63280 gives the same technical surface an IEC-branded path.

The implication for an orchestrator like Cloud-Native DCS is that alignment with MTP and alignment with IEC 63280 are, in practice, the same conversation.

Adherence posture

Aligned. Tracks MTP.

The architectural alignment, CRD mapping, and roadmap gaps are identical to the MTP page. That page carries the substantive content this one would only duplicate:

  • Module Type Package (MTP) — full mapping of MTP concepts to Cloud-Native DCS CRDs, what is aligned today, and what is on the roadmap.

For the complementary orchestrator-side requirements that an MTP / IEC 63280 deployment depends on, see:
